1948: Roberts playing the piano and singing with a group of voters at the Bull Inn in the constituency of Dartford, Kent, where she was standing as the Conservative candidate. She lost the seat in 1950 and 1951

1971: Thatcher visits a school. She was bitterly attacked as 'milk snatcher' in the press after presiding over the abolition of free milk for schoolchildren aged seven to 11

1975: Thatcher leaves her house in Chelsea, London, for her first day's work as the new Conservative leader. She was the first woman ever to head a political party in Britain

1979: Thatcher speaks at the Conservative local government conference at Caxton Hall, London, angrily accusing the Labour government of having tried to whip up non-existent emotions during the referendum campaigns
1979: Thatcher outside 10 Downing Street following her election as prime minister in May. She was Britain's first female prime minister
1980: Thatcher in white overalls and a miner's helmet and donkey jacket for her trip down a mine shaft at the Wistow colliery in the Selby coalfield
1982: Thatcher with her son Mark, who returned to Britain after going missing for six days in the Sahara Desert during the Paris-Dakar car rally
1983: Thatcher visiting British troops on the Falkland Islands
1983: A jubilant Thatcher waves to well-wishers after winning a second election victory
1984: The Grand hotel in Brighton, after a powerful IRA bomb meant for Thatcher and her cabinet exploded, killing five people and injuring more than 30 others

1985: Thatcher helps Ronald Reagan, the US president, walk his dog Lucky on the White House lawn
